Ages 7-14
Friendship Trouble and Exclusion
You can't fix their friendships. You can widen the pool.
Social pain at this age is genuinely painful, and minimizing it lands as dismissal. Take it seriously, resist the urge to intervene directly, and quietly change the odds.
Validate before you strategize
The instinct to jump to solutions makes kids feel unheard and shuts the conversation down. Sit in it with them first.
- "That sounds awful" before any advice.
- Don't badmouth the other kid — they may be friends again by Friday.
- Ask questions instead of issuing verdicts.
Widen the pool outside school
One friend outside the school ecosystem changes everything, because it means the playground is no longer the whole world.
- A club, team, or class with different kids.
- Invite one child over at a time — groups recreate the same dynamic.
- Cousins and neighbours count.
Teach a couple of moves
Rather than solving the specific fight, give them something they can use next time without you.
- How to join a group already playing.
- How to leave a group chat that's turned nasty.
- How to tell the difference between a bad day and a bad friend.
What to say
When they've been dropped
That's genuinely horrible and I'm sorry. You don't have to do anything about it tonight.
Offering perspective without minimizing
This feels like it'll last forever. It won't — but that doesn't make today any easier, so let's just get through today.
Encouraging a wider pool
Who's someone you get on with that you never see outside school? Let's get them over on Saturday.
Where parents get burned
- Calling the other parent, which almost always makes your kid's position worse.
- "Just ignore them" — accurate and useless.
- Pushing them to make up with someone who's being cruel.
When to loosen up: If they're isolated for months, dreading school, or losing sleep, involve the school's pastoral team — chronic exclusion is a wellbeing issue.
Your kid isn't the one in the playbook.
